Undergraduate Graduation Section

 


APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION

The undergraduate graduation application should be filed during the first semester of your senior year. Return the form to the Graduation Section of the Records Office for processing. 

Graduate students must contact the Graduate School Office, Derryberry Hall, Room 306.

ATTENDANCE AT GRADUATION CEREMONY

You must be present at graduation unless you notify the Graduation Section of the Office of Records that your degree is to be conferred in absentia. Your written request listing the address to which your diploma is to be mailed should be submitted to the Graduation Section of the Records Office, Derryberry Hall, Room 102, no later than three weeks before graduation.

If you enroll in a Regent's On-Line Course during the semester you are graduating, your grades will NOT be reported to our campus prior to graduation. You may participate in the ceremony, however, you will not receive your diploma at that time. You must contact the Graduation Section of the Office of Records (prior to commencement) to let us know if you want the diploma mailed or if you will pick it up.

Any graduate requiring special facilities at convocation due to a physical disability should call Debbie Combs, Coordinator of Special Projects, no later than three weeks before graduation. The phone number is 931-372-3301.

Seats will not be reserved for guests since there will be ample seating for everyone.

CATALOG REQUIREMENTS

All students must complete the general requirements as prescribed by the University and the specific requirements set forth for the degree sought. A minimum of 120/132 hours is required. In order to meet the residence requirements, a student must complete at least 25 percent of the credit for the degree requirements including a minimum of 24 of the last 30 hours of 300 and 400 level requirements at Tennessee Technological University.

A student must have a 2.00 GPA overall and a 2.00 average in the major. Transfer students must also have a 2.00 GPA in their TTU overall average and a 2.00 GPA in the TTU major average.

All requirements for undergraduate degrees must be met by 10:00 a.m. the Friday before graduation. All incomplete grades must be removed in the Records Office by 4:30 p.m. one week before graduation.

Any or all undergraduate students may be required, as a prerequisite to graduation, to take one or more tests designed to measure general education achievement and achievement in the major areas for the purpose of evaluating academic programs.

Graduate degree candidates will be given a comprehensive examination. Contact major advisors concerning exam dates.

CAPS, GOWNS AND INVITATIONS

Caps, gowns and invitations are available every semester at the Graduation Fair in the Roaden University Center. Please see Graduation Schedule of Events for the term you plan to graduate for dates of the Graduation Fair. If you participate in the graduation exercises, you must follow directions for appropriate dress and regalia. You should wear dark colored shoes (black, if possible).

If you are a member of the armed services or are receiving a commission, you may wear your military uniform under the academic gown. However, you must wear the mortar board.

DEGREE ANALYSIS

A degree analysis that lists all remaining requirements needed for completion of your academic program will be sent to you and to your major department as soon as possible after receipt of your application for graduation.

DIPLOMAS

For Spring, if all requirements for graduation have been completed, your diploma will be mailed by May 29, 2009 unless:

  • An official transcript showing work completed at another school has not been received by 10:00 a.m. May 11, 2009.
  • All financial obligations to the university (parking tickets, telephone charges, etc.) have not been paid.

If you have not already provided mailing information regarding your diploma, please do so immediately.

  • The College Base Exam (offered through Academic Affairs) is the only exam that is required of all undergraduates who plan to graduate. There are a few allowances for this exam. Contact Lorrie McCracken, Derryberry Hall, Room 204, (931-372-3463) for information.
  • The Praxis Exam is required of all students who are seeking licensure. To ensure that you are registered for all necessary parts of the exam, check with your advisor or Laboratory Experiences (Shanna Muncy, 931-372-3170).
  • The ETS Exam is administered by the College of Business for all of their graduates. Tammy Martin (931-372-3372) is the contact person from the college.
  • The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is required in several departments in the College of Engineering. Check with your advisor to see if you need to take the exam.

    Any or all students may be required to take one or more tests designed to measure general education achievement and achievement in major areas as a prerequisite to graduation, for the purpose of evaluation of academic programs.

GRADUATION WITH HONORS

For listing in the graduation program, honors for undergraduates (cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude) are determined by the cumulative grade point average on degree-credit courses at the beginning of the final semester of enrollment. The honors notation on the diploma and on the transcript is determined by the cumulative average on all degree-credit courses at the end of the final semester.

Cum Laude 3.5 quality point average
Magna Cum Laude 3.7 quality point average
Summa Cum Laude 3.9 quality point average

MISREPRESENTATION OF ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

It is a Class A misdemeanor to misrepresent academic credentials. A person commits the offense of misrepresentation of academic credentials who, knowing that the statement is false and with the intent to secure employment at or admission to an institution of higher education in Tennessee, represents, orally or in writing that such person:

(1) Has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one (1) or more degrees or diplomas from an accredited institution of higher education;

(2) Has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one (1) or more degrees for diplomas from a particular institution of higher education; or

(3) Has successfully completed the required course work for and has been awarded one (1) or more degrees or diplomas in a particular field or specialty from an accredited institution of higher education.
